VPN connections can affect performance

Running a DBA Manufacturing client directly across a VPN connection can result in slower performance and connection problems.

DBA requires a stable network connection

DBA client workstations maintain a direct connection to the Firebird database server. This type of database connection works best on a fast and stable local area network.

A VPN places the workstation and database server across an internet connection. Even when the internet connection has good bandwidth, VPN traffic can introduce additional latency, packet loss, retransmissions, or brief interruptions.

Because DBA performs frequent communication with the database server, these network delays can accumulate and result in:

  • Slower screen response

  • Longer searches and inquiries

  • Slower posting and processing routines

  • Intermittent pauses

  • Database connection errors if the connection is disrupted

Internet speed alone does not determine performance

A high-speed internet connection does not necessarily provide a good database connection.

Database applications are particularly sensitive to network latency and connection stability. A connection can have excellent download and upload speeds while still experiencing delays or brief interruptions that affect DBA performance.

Wireless connections can introduce additional instability and should not be used for a direct DBA client connection to the server.

Use Remote Desktop for remote access

For remote users, we recommend using Remote Desktop rather than running the DBA client directly across a VPN connection.

With Remote Desktop, DBA runs on a computer or server located on the same local network as the Firebird database server. The database communication therefore remains within the local network.

Only the Remote Desktop session travels across the internet.

This provides better performance and is more tolerant of internet latency or temporary connection fluctuations.

Check VPN connections when troubleshooting slowness

If remote users experience poor DBA performance while users on the local network are operating normally, determine whether the affected users are running DBA directly through a VPN.

Moving those users to a Remote Desktop environment can help determine whether the VPN connection is contributing to the problem.
