Data backup services can affect performance
Third-party backup services such as Carbonite, Acronis, Datto, Veeam, and similar products can potentially affect DBA system performance when they are actively scanning or backing up files on the server.
Backup activity competes for server resources
Backup utilities can place additional demands on the server's disk, processor, memory, and network resources. Because DBA Manufacturing continuously reads from and writes to the Firebird database, heavy backup activity can result in slower screen response, longer report processing, slower posting routines, or intermittent pauses throughout the system.
Performance can be particularly affected when the backup utility is continuously monitoring or scanning the drive where the DBA database resides.
Do not use a third-party utility to back up the live database
The live DBA database should be backed up using the DBA Backup Manager rather than by directly copying the active Firebird database file with a third-party backup service.
The Backup Manager creates a Firebird backup file that can safely be incorporated into your normal server backup routine.
A recommended configuration is:
Use the DBA Backup Manager to create your database backups.
Configure your general server backup service to back up the resulting DBA backup files.
Avoid continuously scanning or copying the active DBA database file.
Schedule resource-intensive server backup activity outside normal working hours whenever possible.
Check backup activity when troubleshooting system-wide slowness
If DBA is generally slower than normal across multiple screens and processes, check whether a server backup utility is actively running. If performance improves after the backup activity completes, the backup service may be contributing to the slowdown.
