Existing Connections During Install or Update

During a DBA installation or product update, you may receive the following message:

"...has existing connections. Please cancel and resolve the open connections."

This message can occur when files needed by the installer are still in use. The open connection may involve the DBA database, program files, shared files, or another process accessing the DBA installation.

Before troubleshooting, make sure all users have exited DBA Manufacturing and that no DBA utilities are running.

1. Restart the Firebird Service

On the DBA server, stop and restart the Firebird service.

You can do this from:

Windows Start > DBA Manufacturing > Utilities

or from Windows Services by locating the Firebird Server service and restarting it.

After restarting Firebird, run the installer again.

2. Restart the Server

If restarting Firebird does not clear the connection, restart the DBA server.

After the server has restarted, do not launch DBA. Run the installer or updater before users reconnect to the database.

3. Check for Open DBA Files

If the connection remains, check the server for open files associated with DBA.

  1. Open Computer Management on the server.

  2. Go to Shared Folders > Open Files.

  3. Look for open files associated with DBA Manufacturing or the DBA installation directory.

  4. Close any connections that should no longer be active.

  5. Run the installer again.

Make sure the affected user is no longer actively working in DBA before closing an open file or session.

4. Check for Other Programs Accessing DBA Files

Other applications or services may keep DBA files open even when all users have exited the program.

Examples can include:

  • Backup software

  • Antivirus or endpoint security software

  • File indexing or monitoring utilities

  • Reporting or integration programs

  • ODBC connections

  • Scheduled processes

  • Other third-party applications that access DBA files or the database

Temporarily stop the applicable process or service and then retry the installation.

If security software is involved, consult your IT administrator before disabling protection. Re-enable any protection immediately after the installation or update is complete.

5. If the DBA Database Connection Cannot Be Cleared

If the open connection is specifically related to the DBA database and the preceding steps do not resolve it, use DBA Backup Manager to perform a complete Backup and Restore.

The Backup and Restore process recreates the database and can clear database-specific connection conditions that prevent the installer from continuing.

See Backup and Restore for instructions.

After the restore is complete, run the installer before allowing users to reconnect to DBA.
